WSAW/WZAW is looking for a dynamic, tech-savvy person who wants to get your foot in the door in the news industry.  The ideal candidate is responsible for writing/producing compelling and visually appealing newscasts for TV, as well as digital content for web and social media.  The person must have the ability to craft compelling TV rundowns that emphasize urgency, immediacy, Breaking News, Disruptive and Breaking Weather.  The candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day production of our 4pm newscast and fill-in as needed on other WSAW/WZAW newscasts.  On the digital side, this person will make regular beat calls, monitor meeting agendas, write web stories, know strong social engagement, send push notifications and monitor trending stories in the market.  Strong candidates may also have the opportunity to gather breaking news content for newscasts. 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Produce a creative and informative newscast with emphasis on the viewers’ interests
  • Coordinate the writing and editing of scripts that incorporate video, natural sound and graphics to enhance storytelling
  • Coordinate and plan live shots
  • Time the newscast in the control room
  • Communicate with anchors, field crews and control room staff
  • Know strong social and online engagement tactics including slideshows, videos, links, polls, livestreams, chats, heat maps and more
  • Strong news judgement
  • Creativity in news presentation and online content


The ideal candidate would possess the following skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field is desired
  • In lieu of a college degree, applicants with 2 or more years of experience in the broadcast or forecasting industry will be considered.
  • Strong writing skills, using correct grammar
  • Must be able to work well under deadline pressure
  • Must be professional and courteous with the public, answer phones and greeting guests who are booked to appear on air
  • Must work individually as well as part of a team
  • Must have a strong understanding of journalistic ethics
  • Must have strong organizational skills
  • Must be extremely flexible to work different shifts throughout the year
  • Familiarity with Avid iNews and/or ENPS, Grass Valley Edius and Arc Publishing preferred
