Oversee the station’s news program as assigned and helps implement on a daily basis the strategies developed by the news director to improve the news product and to make the station No. 1 in news viewers. May represent the news director on occasions as assigned.


Essential Functions of the Job: 

  • Participates in daily meetings where stores are discussed and assigned to reporters.
  • When stories are assigned, make sure the reporters are informed, what is expected of them.  (The focus of the story; where it might play in newscasts; possible productions techniques to enhance the story, etc.).
  • Works closely with the assignment desk on story coverage throughout the day.
    Makes sure program producers are kept informed on developments, changes, etc. throughout the day.
  • Assists (and arbitrates when necessary) producers in selecting stories for their broadcasts.
  • Check producer’s formats for pace, flow, graphic and content.
  • Reads (and edits when necessary) reporters scripts.
  • Assist news director in critiquing daily broadcasts.
  • May have to produce broadcast from time to time.
  • Supervise/manage program employees (writers, producers, production assistants, etc).

The above-mentioned duties shall not be considered all-inclusive.  You will be expected to perform any or all additional duties required by your manager or general manager and to cooperate fully with those persons employed by other departments of KUSI-TV.   Employees may occasionally be asked to perform work on special assignments in addition to normal job duties.  KUSI Management reserves the right to change job responsibilities, transfer job positions, or assign additional job duties at any time.



  • Prefer minimum five years broadcast TV experience as a news producer or equal amount of experience in some other capacity in the broadcast field. 
  • Prefer some familiarity with ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and SNG (Satellite News Gathering) operations.
  • Prefer college degree in communications, journalism or broadcast news.
  • Must be an effective leader and able to motivate others.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be a natural team leader.
  • Able to perform and adjust under pressure.
  • Able to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Able to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.


  • Must be able to work a minimum eight-hour day and able to work overtime daily as or, if needed.
  • Individual must be willing to participate in projects sponsored by the station to enhance its image or help the community.
  • Must be capable of interacting positively and productively with other employees.
