The Political Reporter is responsible for developing, investigating, writing, reporting and copy‐editing content for on‐air broadcast and for publication across KTUU’s digital platforms. Must generate story and source contacts, and enterprise stories on a daily basis. Delivers reports of broad interest, using strong visual and ethical standards.
Coverage is on‐air, live or taped, and on‐line. The Political Reporter will be based in Juneau, Alaska January through April and as needed to cover Alaskas annual Legislative Session.


Essential Functions:
 Research, gather, and provide news and information in the most accurate, appealing, timely and creative way using all sources
 Enterprise hard‐news, research‐driven pieces under tight deadlines
 Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments
 Write and produce stories for daily newscasts and website
 Post and regularly update stories and other material on the web, often remotely while traveling
 Make regular beat checks
 Conduct interviews in the field and on‐set
 Report “live” on the scene
 Must update social media sites regularly, including Facebook, to report stories and interact with viewers
 Participate in story selection process through meetings, regularly contribute story ideas
 Represent the station at public events
 Must be able to utilize non‐linear editing equipment (additional training is available)
 Present TV stories in alternative and creative ways that emphasize storytelling techniques
 Possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, things, and history
 Enter CG text into newsroom software
 Enterprise, produce, and track packages
 Demonstrate sound news judgment, collaborate with others to present the story in the best way
 Communicate with the Assignment Desk, Newsroom Managers and other appropriate staff members during breaking news
 Follow clothing and appearance guidelines
 Writes and posts digital stories with text, video and photos, as needed
 Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
 Performs other incidental and related duties as assigned


Job Requirements
 3‐5 years of reporting experience (political experience is a plus)
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 Excellent reporting skills required, both live and recorded, and the ability to ad‐lib during breaking news
 Excellent interview and communication skills
 Strong knowledge of politics and legislative branch of government (local, state and national)
 Must be able to write in a clear, concise, and conversational manner
 Strong research skills, including the ability to navigate online search engines
 Strong initiative and attention to detail is required
 Ability to do active and involved live shots and stand‐ups on‐air
 Strong on‐camera presentation skills required
 Basic computer knowledge including newsroom software, Microsoft applications and Internet use
 Ability to work well with others and independently with limited supervision
 Basic knowledge of newsroom software (ENPS knowledge is a plus)
 Demonstrate solid news judgment and journalistic ethics
 Must possess web writing skills and basic knowledge of web posting software (Clickability knowledge is a plus)
 Strong knowledge and regular use of social media
 Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that will work well with co‐workers, supervisors, and customers
 Must enterprise hard‐news, research‐based stories at daily news meetings
 Stay current with national and local news/weather
 Meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure
 Must have the desire to be at work during big breaking news, weather coverage and special event coverage

 College degree is required. Journalism or related field is preferred.
 Must hold a valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Working Conditions:
 Must be able stand for long periods of time
 Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. for short distances. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear. Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend and move about the facility.
 Exposure to extreme atmospheric conditions will be encountered. Significant work in all weather conditions is to be expected.
 Schedule alterations should be expected as a news employee.
