Morning Meteorologist / Multimedia Journalist

FLSA Status: Non‐Exempt Grade

This employee must produce and deliver weathercasts from the station daily (Monday‐Friday) and make live reports from the field, as needed, in order to convey a daily weather story. In severe weather situations, employee must clearly and concisely present information and graphics to help viewers protect their lives and property. This employee will serve as a fill‐in replacement, on call and as needed, to cover shifts unable to be covered by any of KTUU’s other meteorologists. This employee will also serve as a Multimedia Journalist after the Morning Edition newscast, generating live and taped news content for newscasts and all digital platforms.


Essential Functions:

 Prepare and deliver weather over several platforms, including social media

 Responsible for developing all weather forecasts and accompanying computer graphics, delivering on‐air weathercasts and live weather reports from the field.

 Live “on‐the‐scene” reporting, especially during breaking news and severe weather

 Effectively communicate information regarding severe weather coverage in a clear and concise graphic presentation

 Provide weather forecasts for partnering radio stations

 Communicate critical weather information, especially during severe weather, to producers and other critical staff members to ensure a consistent and accurate message to viewers

 Work with the Chief Meteorologist, News Director and Assistant News Director to develop overall strategies and goals in line with the department and station

 Follow clothing and appearance guidelines

 Attend/host/speak at community service, schools and community events; meet and greet viewers

 Ensure public appearances in schools and community events are consistent with image and goals of station

 Participate in story selection process through meetings; attendance at editorial meetings

 Must be able to enterprise and field report stories for newscasts under tight deadlines

 Write pkgs and elements for air and for all digital platforms

 Report research‐based stories

 Develop and maintain sources in the news/weather/science industry

 Use non‐linear editing equipment, as needed

 Various shift work will be required. Work overnight/early mornings, weekends, evenings and holidays as assigned

 Perform other related duties as assigned


Job Requirements


 2 years of experience on‐air as a television meteorologist is preferred (reporting experience is a plus)

 Experience with both weather and newsroom computer systems (ENPS is preferable)

 Prepare and deliver weather forecast using weather date and computers

 Experience with weather computers systems (WSI is preferable)

 Editing and Graphics experience; must be willing to learn how to produce and edit graphics, still pictures and video

 Reporting, photography, edit and news writing experience is preferred

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 Be able to speak and write clearly and accurately

 Must be able to work well under pressure

 Ability to maintain professional and ethical conduct at the station and in the community

 Willingness to be a hard‐working staff member and work as part of a team is required

 Excellent live reporting skills and strong on‐camera presentation skills required

 Strong initiative and attention to detail is required

 Ability to work with limited supervision is a must

 Must possess excellent interview and conversational reading and writing skills

 Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that will work well with co‐workers, supervisors and viewers

 Knowledge of social media outlets and website postings (website and digital/mobile platforms)

 Ability to keep up with national and local news/weather is required

 Use graphics to convey weather information to audience

 Analyze weather patterns into current and forecast information

 Enterprise local hard‐news stories related to weather, science and all other news topics, as needed


 Bachelor’s degree in meteorology or related field preferred (Broadcast journalism degree is a plus)


 Must hold a valid driver’s license and a good driving record

 At least one meteorology seal (AMS/NWS) is preferred

Working Conditions:

 Be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

 Able to lift and carry 10 – 25 lbs. for short distances.

 While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear. Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend and move about the facility.

 Exposure to atmospheric conditions will be encountered; significant outdoor work in all weather conditions is to be expected. Schedule changes should be expected.
