KHNS seeks an energetic, committed, personable and very tech-savvy Program Director. The Program Director serves under the general supervision of the Station Manager, works with a paid staff, 50 volunteers, and is responsible for the content and presentation of programs broadcast on KHNS. Adhering to the budget, the Program Director seeks, develops, evaluates, acquires and schedules programs. The Program Director displays leadership regarding program policies and performance of on-air shifts; supervises personnel and community volunteers; and keeps KHNS current with FCC rules as they pertain to programming.

About our location: Haines and Skagway score consistently in top-rated small town lists. We are on the edge of the Lynn Canal in Southeast Alaska surrounded by mountains, sea, glaciers and wildlife and a prime destination for fishing, skiing, hiking and hunting. Our community is diverse, engaged and active with a swimming pool, museums and a library that won the 2005 Best Small Town Library award. Haines is primarily a fishing town of 2,200 people. Skagway has fewer residents but has nearly one million cruise ship visitors in the summer. The communities are separated by 13 miles of water and are traveled by boat or small plane. KHNS has a studio in both communities, but our staff primarily works out of Haines, with frequent trips to Skagway. Klukwan is a small Alaska Native village near Haines accessible by road.

Salary: $40,000. Position includes health insurance and a flexible vacation policy.
This is a full-time exempt position based at KHNS Haines studio.

Responsibilities:

General Duties:

Develop on-air programs and schedules that meet mission-driven goals and achieve balance between non-local and locally produced programs.

Coordinate with program distribution representatives.

Oversee operation of the automation system (DAD) and Content Depot, including programming and troubleshooting.

Supervise program department personnel. Ensure that program and operating logs are current.

Field questions, complaints, and compliments from the listenership regarding programming and policies.

Work cooperatively with General Manager in establishing program content and format.

Work cooperatively with station engineer to maintain broadcast equipment.

Work cooperatively with News Department and General Manager in establishing and scheduling news and public affairs programming.

Work with Development Director on scheduling of underwriting. Assist in the production of underwriting and EPSA statements for broadcast.

Sustain community contact for programming issues, work with the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) and maintain KHNS public files relating to programming.

Maintain the Issues Program List and file in the public file quarterly.

Fill in for on-air host when needed.  Assist in recruiting, training, and scheduling volunteers for on-air shifts, update training materials, and recognize volunteers at designated public or in-house functions.

Lead the programming end of on-air membership drives by planning and scheduling programming, scheduling pitch breaks, and pitches on-air as necessary.

Provide reports as needed to management along with other duties as assigned by the General Manager.

Supervises Operation/Production Assistant, On-Air Volunteer staff,

Help Maintain upkeep and cleanliness of the studios.

Requirements:

Position Qualifications:  The job of programming at KHNS requires a minimum of two years’ experience with emphasis on community radio. Similar or equivalent experience will be considered.

Ability to work comfortably with computer software of many kinds, most notably the Enco system (DAD), Adobe Audition and the Public Radio Satellite System or equivalent, or the demonstrated capacity and willingness to quickly become so.

Exceptional production and on-air performance skills, as demonstrated by an audition tape.

Interfacing with and downloading from multiple distribution sites.

Ability to work independently and under pressure as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively and enthusiastically in collaboration with a wide variety of people, both in groups and one-to-one; to balance multiple projects at once.

Demonstrated commitment to independent media, to community involvement, creative radio, public information, audience building and promotion techniques.

Demonstrated volunteer supervision and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge and appreciation of a wide variety of musical genres.

Desired Qualifications: Experience and comfort with public speaking and teaching skills.
