KOLD has an opening for a full-time Assistant Chief Engineer in Tucson, Arizona. The Assistant Chief Engineer resolves on air issue, installs, documents, operates, maintains, updates, and repairs hardware, facilities, and systems used for broadcasting and news production. The Assistant Chief Engineer reports to the Director of Technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain broadcast technology, facilities, and equipment for the station 
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair full power UHF DTV solid state and IOT transmitters and low power translators 
  • Maintain IT network, switches, work stations, laptops and printer 
  • Maintain news gathering field gear, to include cameras, editors, microwave/satellite live trucks 
  • Perform routine equipment/facility maintenance at studio and remote locations 
  • Assist with system integration and modification of TV/IT systems, specifically with reference to cabling and system documentation to KOLD standards 
  • Communicate with members of the Technology team and other departments to contribute to the resolution of equipment and system performance issues 
  • Supervise and mentor team members in Engineering/IT and Master Control 
  • Available for outages and on call 24/7 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Technical degree in Electronic Engineering, Broadcasting, Information Technology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written 
  • Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record 
  • Ability to operate a variety of machinery and vehicles, to include a snowcat 
  • Strong PC/MS Office experience plus AutoCad 
  • Experience with video cameras, production setups, A/V routing and patching, audio equipment, graphics systems, editing systems and live trucks 
  • Familiarity with digital solid state and IOT transmitters, microwave equipment, satellite antennas / receivers and other broadcast-related equipment 
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Physical Demands and Work Environment: 

The Assistant Chief Engineer must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions using common sense without supervision, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the Assistant Chief Engineer must be able to lift, set up, and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and stairs, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions, requiring average or above vision.
